Today is the big day! It's been very difficult to keep this one a secret, and we are thrilled to finally be able to share.
We had the distinct honour of having our apparel featured in the latest Gord Downie video, called Useless Nights. The entire album was recorded just prior to his passing and each song (and video) is being released one at a time, a week apart.
To me, music is sacred, and a true necessity in life. It has played a major role in my life for as long as I can remember. I have cassette recordings of myself at age 3 singing “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash. I still remember seeing The Beach Boys in Ottawa - my very first concert - when I was 6. I started collecting vinyl and pouring over the album art and liner notes when I was in high school in the early 90s. Live shows were always a MUST and a constant throughout my teenage years - and to this day (pre-Covid, of course. Ugh.)
An important band for me, and to Canada in general, are the Tragically Hip. Gord Downie and the Hip always perfectly embraced and encapsulated the rock & roll voice and spirit of our great country. From their earliest albums to their last, their sound - both musically and lyrically - were truly embraced by the nation. Their fanbase bridged many generations and walks of life - which is no small feat in a country as diverse as ours. I was fortunate to see their final show in Kingston and to share that space, that energy, the tears of joy and the great sadness with 5,000 other fans and fellow Canadians (our Prime Minister included). It was a very special moment and musical highlight among the very many I’ve experienced throughout my life.
To be included in this extremely special and touching project - Gord’s last - along with the other extremely talented friends and artists who helped put this project together, brings me a lot of joy and gratitude. I’m grateful and thankful for the opportunity. I’m grateful and thankful for Gord Downie and the Tragically Hip. And I’m grateful and thankful to be Canadian - and that this music is a part of our social and cultural fiber.
In honour of Gord's legacy, today until October 14th, 2020 we are donating
5% of all sales to the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund,
which aims to shine a light on Indigenous reconciliation and the history of residential schools in Canada.
