We headed north, beyond Paradise Valley and with the Squamish River to our left, towards Cloudburst Mountain. We drove with the pines on dusty logging roads with one radio frequency, past the snow line until even his truck had to slow. We packed the snowmobiles and kept climbing. The lodgepole pines were still there, hidden in a spruce trap. We spent the afternoon shovelling the snow flat and raised the poles on our new clearing. We set up Mason's brand new canvas. The borders in Europe are now closed. I skied down after sunset and took the last flight from Vancouver back to France the very next day. I think Mason and Diane are staying until the end of time. The fall began long ago but you can't stop the snow.
